Patients who are candidates for obesity surgery are usually those who have failed to lose weight permanently and/or regained weight, although they have repeatedly tried diet and exercise.
Obesity surgery is not suitable for every patient and there are some qualification criteria. The most important of these are that the patient has chronic comorbidities that are believed to recover after surgery or if the BMI is 35 and above.
Patients with a BMI of 35 and above can be operated directly, while patients with a BMI of 30-35 are sought for chronic comorbidities.
For patients with BMI below 30, alternatives such as gastric balloon application for non-surgical weight loss are recommended.
