Endodontics is a field of dentistry that covers and treats dental cases that include pulp, which is the living tissue of a tooth. Pulp is the general name given to the vascular-neural network that nourishes the tooth.
Endodontic treatment (Root canal treatment): It is applied in cases where the dental pulp is damaged by caries or other factors. The most prominent symptom is pain. Pain may be severe cold-hot sensitivity or spontaneously occurring. In addition, root canal treatment is resorted in the treatment of dental abscesses, teeth that are damaged as a result of an accident and colored teeth.
In endodontic treatments, dental pulp is removed from root canals, canals are shaped, disinfected, and filled with biocompatible canal filling materials.
In case endodontic treatment is neglected, it is inevitable for an inflammation to develop in dental root and damage surrounding tissues. In such cases, it may be necessary to surgically remove part of a dental root (apicoectomy) or to remove it completely.
Many patients think that there will be pain due to this procedure, but thanks to the advanced anesthetic techniques applied, they can undergo both painless and comfortable treatment. Treatment can be completed in one session or in several sessions, depending on the condition of infection in the tooth. Antibiotics may be used to treat infections in some cases. It is not possible to cure this condition only with antibiotics without the intervention of a physician.
Fiber Post: In cases where there is a lot of tissue loss in the teeth, the upper part is restored by receiving support from dental root. It is a treatment method applied by placing the ‘post core’ material inside the root after applying root canal treatment to the tooth. In this way, the durability of a tooth is increased by receiving support from both the root and the upper part of the tooth. The most commonly used material today is fiber posts.
Devital Bleaching: There may be discoloration in teeth in purple or gray tones due to trauma, medications used for some systemic diseases, or after root canal treatment. To eliminate discoloration, a 10% carbamide peroxide gel is placed inside the tooth. Depending on the color of the tooth, it is controllably kept inside the tooth for 3-7 days. This process is repeated until the colored tooth becomes the same color as the adjacent teeth.
Apicoectomy: The process of surgically removing the inflamed part of a tooth from the root apex located in the bone is called an apicoectomy.
Sometimes, root canal treatment may not be sufficient alone to eliminate inflammation, and the abscess and osteonecrosis at the root continue to grow. In such situations, it may be necessary to surgically remove the damaged tissue and the root apex.
