What is the best time for ear plastic surgery?

Aesthetic operations on the ear are performed at the age of 5-6 years, because by then the auricle has largely completed its development. If the surgery is performed at the right time, children will not experience social trauma. Another advantage of performing this operation in childhood is the soft and flexible ear cartilage, which can be shaped more easily and permanently.

What is taken into account during this operation?

A beautiful ear should also a look natural. Ear folds should be soft and in harmony with their surroundings. Viewed from the front, the outermost ear crease should be visible from the front. The projection of the ear in relation to the head should be harmonious in all views.

How is the surgery performed?

During the surgery, a small incision is made behind the ear to access the cartilage. Depending on the technique to be used, the cartilage is reshaped and the new shape is permanently fixed with sutures. Symmetry is very important here. After sutures are placed on the skin, the ear will be bandeged.

What is the type of anesthesia? How long does the operation take?

The procedure takes an average of 60-90 minutes. While ear aesthetics are performed under local anesthesia in adults, general anesthesia is preferred in children.

How is it going on after the operation?

After the operation, moderate pain may occur. These e’s are not very strong and can be treated with medication. If the pain persists for more than 24 hours or gets worse, you should see your doctor. The wrapped ear bandage will be removed in 3-7 days depending on the situation. From now on it is recommended to wear a tennis band to keep the ears in a stable position and protect them. This must be used day and night for two weeks and an additional two weeks only at night. Sport should not be practiced for at least 6 weeks. If an ear bandage or tennis bandage is worn and there is no physical contact, return to school or work is possible after 2-3 days.

What complications can occur after ear surgery?

Bruising (hematoma): only rarely. This is the accumulation of blood between the ear cartilage and the skin. It delays healing and paves the way for infection. In this situation, the accumulated blood is drained and a bandage is applied.
Problem recurrence: If there is trauma or loosening of the sutures after surgery, the problem may recur. The process is then repeated.
Surgical scar: Traces that may remain behind the ear as a result of this operation are not noticed. Sometimes a thin line can be seen in front of the ear.
Lack of symmetry: Differences in shape and outward projection can exist between the ears. In this case, a re-intervention may be necessary.
