Breast Augmentation

Breasts are extremely important organs for the aesthetic appearance of the female body. Breasts can be small for a variety of structural reasons. One breast can be smaller than the other, or asymmetrical. Sometimes there are no breasts from birth. Today, there is no other way to adjust or increase the volume of breasts except silicone prostheses.

What is the content of the breast prosthesis?

Breast prostheses consist of a solid silicone capsule and a serum or cohesion gel silicone filled into this capsule. There are teardrop or round shapes. Each prosthesis has its own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, these should be discussed in detail before the operation in order to then decide together which one will be used.

What is a silicone breast prosthesis?

Silicone prostheses, which came into use in the 1960s, are still widely used today. Significant innovations have been made in the last 20 years and scientific research has shown that silicon is the least harmful substance to the human body. Products containing silicone are also used for other purposes in the cosmetics industry and medicine.

The breast prostheses used today can be named as follows:

Filled with gel: Inside the balloon, whose outer surface is made of silicone, there is also a gel made of silicone. They are manufactured ready to use in different sizes.

Filled with saline: The silicone balloon is empty. During the operation, it is filled with a “saline solution” until the desired volume is reached. Recently, these one have been made ready-to-use.

Breast augmentation surgery can cause prosthesis-related problems, in which the body reacts to the enlargement of the breast by a substance foreign to the body. This is when a contracture occurs due to the membrane that forms around the prosthesis, called the capsule (although this membrane can vary in thickness). The thin membrane doesn’t cause any problems. When a membrane of medium thickness forms, a slight hardness in the breasts and prominence at the base of the breasts can be noted. In rare cases, the body may not accept this foreign substance, forming a thick membrane (capsule) around the prosthesis and trying to compress it, trap it, and sometimes expel it from the body. With thick capsule formation, hardness and sometimes asymmetry in the breasts can be seen. With mild and moderate capsular contracture, external massage and, if necessary, additional surgery to remove the capsule around the prosthesis can be performed. In the case of severe capsular contracture, there is no other choice but to remove the prosthesis.

Although the outer surface of silicone prostheses is very thin, they are very resistant to external influences. Normal and moderate massages do no harm. The person can lie on their stomach 2 months after the operation.

Occasionally, prosthesis contents may leak out of the balloon. If a gel-filled prosthesis is used, these substances leaking into the tissue spaces can cause massing.

If saline is used, the saline filled into the prosthesis may leak out of the prosthesis into the interstitial tissues. In this case, the escaping serum is quickly absorbed by the tissue without harming the body. In fact, this substance, which can be administered intravenously and used for other treatment purposes, is not harmful.

Prosthesis cracks are very rare. Similar to traffic accidents, pressure or serious injuries can occur. In such a case, the content of the prosthesis is important. If it is filled with a saline solution, there is nothing to worry about.

If cancer develops in a breast with a silicone breast prosthesis (the risk of cancer is the same as for breasts without a prosthesis), surgery and other forms of cancer treatment are carried out in accordance with the norm. It is recommended that you have your check-up mammograms performed in centers experienced in examining prosthetic breasts.

Before deciding to have breast augmentation surgery, you should clearly inform your doctor about the defect that is bothering you and your expectations of the surgery. They should discuss the prosthesis to choose, the incision where the prosthesis will be placed, the type of anesthesia, and the early and late consequences of the surgery.

What should be considered before the operation?

Before surgery, the breast tissue in patients who have a prosthesis fitted is examined by radiological tests called mammography and, if necessary, by ultrasound.

Are there any risks with breast augmentation?

Every surgery has common or unique risks. Edema and chest pain are the postoperative complaints. Bleeding and infection from surgery are rare conditions. Some patients complain of increased or decreased nipple sensitivity or numbness around the incision after surgery. This is usually temporary.

What is the type of anesthesia? How long does the operation take?

The operation is performed under general anesthesia in hospital conditions in the operating room. 1-1 It takes 5 hours.

What is after the operation?

The operation leaves a scar at the site where the prosthesis was inserted. This can be in the underbreast crease, the armpit or the edge of the nipple. Wherever the cut was made, it will leave a fine mark. At first you will see this scar clearly, but over time it will become less noticeable. The prosthesis can be placed behind the breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle. Each application has advantages and disadvantages. This detail should also be discussed before the operation.

How do you feel after the surgery?

After the operation, there is usually no great pain. The pain is minimal. If the prosthesis is placed behind the pectoral muscle, arm movements may be restricted for a few days. The patient wears a sports bra for 6 weeks and massage is recommended. Swelling may occur in the early stages. There may be numbness in the nipple and purple discoloration of the skin. Both disappear by themselves after a short time. The patient can work again after 3-4 days. It is recommended not to engage in heavy exercise for 3 months.
